Obviously you can't get all of the training you need here. However, what can be obtained here is some sound reasoning about the training. You can pick up valuable techniques on how to put your training efforts to the best use, consistent with the desired outcome of each level of certification. That is the goal of this section of training.
Many approaches to training are used with different purposes in mind i.e., self study courses, classroom, online courses, cardboard trainer, flight training devices (FTD), full motion simulators, and don't forget in-flight. Let's discuss some advantages and disadvantages of each. The purpose is to gain the most from each and to know when and when not to use them.
These are generalizations and are not meant to rate one provider over another. You should get a feel for the type of package that would suit you best for your circumstances.
Professional Training
Self Study
Basic training can rely heavily on self study courses because an apple is an apple and an orange is an orange. There is a certain amount of subject matter that has to be explained. Many providers have done an excellent job of illustrating the concepts involved in putting the laws of physics into motion (dynamics.)
Getting through the instrument rating on self study is more difficult but, can be done with good motivation. Lack of time available is not solved by self study programs. Many times it is the context of the situation that has to be explained. It can take much more time to understand complex issues and may be impossible without CFI help. Use it more as preparation for lessons than a substitute for training.
